    Fall Festival Coming September 11


  • At 11 a.m. Geoff Mehl, webmaster of Pennystone.com (www.pennystone.com) will give a presentation: "Gardening in the Poconos" on the challenges of gardening and landscaping using native plants in the Poconos. Mehl is a specialist on gardening in Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Wayne Counties, as well as the rest of northeast Pennsylvania.
  • At 1 p.m. Master Gardener Joe Judge will give a talk on composting, how to turn garden and kitchen waste into black gold.
  • At 2 p.m. Master Gardener Jen Bradley will present "Metamorphosis in your Garden": tips on how to welcome and keep butterflies in your garden.
  • Other events and presentations will take place at intervals throughout the day, They include:
  • demonstrations of plein air landscape drawing and painting with New Tripoli artist Kay Stauffer
  • a display of and demonstration about snakes and the role they play in the environment
  • display gardens showing how to use native plants in home landscapes.
  • Free literature will be available, including specialized lists showing what plants to use to attract butterflies or hummingbirds, and for other special needs such as planting in the shade, or in wetlands.

    We're also offering two unique books for sale:
  • One is Catherine Zimmerman's "Urban and Suburban Meadows" (Bringing Meadowscaping to Big and Small Places), which brought its senior citizen author national attention. While she will not be present for the festival, the available copies of her book have been pre-signed by her.
  • The other book, of special interest to birdlovers, is "Birds of the Lehigh Valley", by Lehigh Valley Audubon Society members Peter G. Saeger, Barbara C. Malt, and Kevin F. Crilley.
  • Edge of the Woods is the only nursery in the Lehigh Valley specializing in native plants.

    Native plants provide natural and sustainable beauty and a welcoming habitat for birds, butterflies and other insects, ensuring a future filled with a healthy diversity of plants and wildlife.

    We are committed to sustainable growing practices and use a peat-free compost based potting mix. (Peat is a non-renewable resource.) Compost provides an excellent source of organic nutrients and helps retain moisture. We use minimal pesticides in the nursery and practice IPM (Integrated Pest Management).

    For a general idea of the plants we carry, please click the "Our Plants" button on the menu bar to the left. We carry trees, shrubs, perennials, ferns, wildflowers and grasses that are native to the mid-atlantic/northeast areas of the U.S.
